DEAR HEAD OF NATION

STREET PEOPLE TALK:
STREET PEOPLE: DEFN:
BUMS,
VAGRANTS,
RUBBIES GET A JOB,
SOLVENT SNIFFERS
THE HOMELESS,
STREET PEOPLE,
PANHANDLERS,
DRUG ADDICTS,
ALCOHOL ADDICTS.
THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE NAMES
PEOPLE GIVE THEM.
THEY GENERALLY BEG FOR MONEY
TO PAY FOR ALCOHOL AND DRUGS
FOR DAILY PARTY TIME.

IN KENORA ONTARIO THESE PEOPLE
HAVE A MORE DIGNIFIED NAME THEY ARE CALLED
" STREET CLEANERS "
EMPLOYEES OF THE CITY OF KENORA.

THESE STREET CLEANERS HAVE BECOME
A KEY PART OF REVITALIZING THIS CITY
OF 16,500 PEOPLE INTO A
SHINY TOURIST CENTER.
"YOU HAVE
BROKEN GLASS ON THE STREETS,
VOMIT THAT RESULTS FROM DRINKING POISON--ALCOHOL,
GRAFITTI FROM THE FRUSTRATION OF YOUTH
HAVING NO JOBS SAYS
BUCK MAT IOWSKI
THE FORMER BOXER WHO CREATED THIS PROGRAM
TO REVITALIZE THE WATER FRONT OF KENORA.
THEY ARE CALLED
BUCKS BRIGADE.
THE BRIGADE CLEAN UP LITTER ALL OVER THE CITY,
PEELS POSTERS OFF LIGHT STANDARDS,
WHITE WASHES GRAFFITI,
HALLS RIP RAP FROM THE WATERFRONT
TO PROTECT THE
"LAKE OF THE WOODS" SHORELINE,
COLLECTS VOMIT CREATING ALCOHOL BOTTLES,
SETS UP TABLES, CHAIRS, TENTS,
THAT CAN HOLD 2,300 PEOPLE FOR SPECIAL EVENTS.

BUCKS BRIGADE HAVE BECOME PART OF
THE FABRIC OF THE CITY.
THE BRIGADE TURNS UP DAILY AT A LOCATION TO WORK
BUT BUCK NEVER KNOWS
WHO WILL TURN UP FROM DAY TO DAY OR FOR HOW LONG.
BUCK CAN NOT PHONE THEM
TO GET TO WORK BECAUSE THEY ARE
HOMELESS.
NEVER MIND THE JOBS ARE THERE AND
THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY APPRECIATE THEM.

THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY APPRECIATE THEM
BECAUSE THE CITY IS BEING KEPT CLEAN
AND THE HOMELESS ARE BEING HELPED.

SEE: NATIONAL POST JUNE 19,2006.

THERE IS NOT A TOWN OR CITY IN THE WORLD
THAT CAN NOT BENEFIT FROM THIS PROGRAM
AS LONG AS NATIONS CONTINUE TO ALLOW ALCOHOL
TO DEGRADE ITS PEOPLE AND CREATE STREET PEOPLE
DEGRADED BY ALCOHOL THAT ADDICTS THEM.

PEACE

HAROLD C FUNK TO:190 HEADS OF NATIONS. LETTER NO:868 E-MAIL ON.

Comments:
Hi Harold,
Nice site here.I enjoy your off the beaten track commentary! I would like to comment, if thats okay with you? I will say that a few people that i have met along the way, from Kenora do not see Bucks as "helpful", because a broom and "cleaning up" the mess does not provide a place to live.

The City and a few of its service agencies, that thrive off of "make work" type projects due to a struggling northern economy (see recently; Kenora Abitibi mill closure).

some here view this Bucks Brigade idea as exploitive of the already oppressed, aboriginal homeless.

I think, but am not sure this guy makes money from this operation?

People need jobs, people need self dignity, people need to be valued, but downloading the responsibility of caring for the homeless to some guy who's armchair philosophy that "a good days work cures any ill" is not only degrading, it has not helped the majority of these people be safe from abuse, violence, erase past police charges that create barriers to GAINFUL employment, kick their addictions, or make enough to obtain expensive, almost non-existent rental housing.

The idea sounds great,if they were given housing and money to survive but the city workers are payed to clean up and are payed more than enough to do the job. Bucks is about an old school philosophy that did not work any better in the 1950's, than it does now.

If the city had really ever cared about the homeless (its not like this has not been going on since the 1960's), they would put significant funding into the following volunteer project that concerned citizens had to put together themselves.
www.makingkenorahome.ca
They would have LONG AGO demanded funding for a new detox, they would have LONG AGO made Queens park listen to their collective needs. It is not a now problem, it has been ignored for a long time. The mill closure has brought a renewed interest in cleaning up the streets,to create a viable tourist destination. I have heard it said that if many people in Kenora had their way, they would clean up more than bottles...they would clean up the homeless problem by arresting them continuously for the charge of disturbing the peace. Ohhh wait! they already do that, thats why Kenora has the highest rates of "crime" in Ontario per capita.

The bread and butter of the local police, courts, lawyer economy is based on the endless revolving door, that this Buck guy is "helping" by giving them a broom.

Its window dressing and its my personal opinion that it is disgusting.

Kate Wingfield.
